Poker Rules & Gameplay Guide

Poker combines card knowledge, position, betting decisions, and table awareness. This section explains the basic flow of a poker hand, common betting actions, key hand rankings, and practical points to review before joining a table.

How a Poker Hand Begins
Players join a table, receive starting cards, and take turns acting according to the selected poker variant. Position matters because players who act later can observe earlier decisions before choosing their own action.

Common Betting Actions
Typical options include check, bet, call, raise, and fold. The available action depends on the previous betting activity, the table rules, and the chips committed during the current round.

Community Cards and Showdown
In community-card formats such as Texas Hold’em, shared cards are revealed across several betting rounds. Players combine their private cards with the community cards to form the strongest valid five-card hand.

Choosing a Suitable Table
Review the table limits, buy-in, pace, and format before joining. Begin with limits that match your budget, understand the hand rankings, and avoid chasing losses after an unfavorable result.

How to Play Poker (Texas Hold’em) – A Quick Guide

Learn the basic steps to start playing poker, from choosing a table and receiving cards to making betting decisions and completing the hand.

How to Play Poker

1. The Setup
The game starts with a dealer button moving clockwise each hand. The two players to the left post forced bets: the Small Blind (half the minimum bet) and the Big Blind (full minimum bet). This ensures there’s always money to play for.
2. Your Cards
Each player receives two private cards called hole cards. Only you can see these. After checking your cards, action begins from the player left of the Big Blind.

3. Your Options – When it’s your turn, you can:
Fold – Throw your cards if weak. You lose what you’ve bet, but save bigger losses.
Check – Pass if no one has bet yet.
Call – Match the current bet.
Raise – Increase the bet to pressure others.
Beginner tip: Only play strong starting hands like pocket Aces, Kings, or Ace-King. Weak hands like 7-2? Fold immediately.

4. The Community Cards
The dealer burns one card, then places three community cards face up (the Flop). Another betting round follows. Then comes the Turn (4th community card), another bet round, and finally the River (5th card), with a final betting round.

5. The Showdown
If two or more players remain after the River, they reveal their cards. You make your best 5-card hand using any combination of your 2 hole cards and the 5 community cards. Hand rankings from highest to lowest:
Royal Flush > Straight Flush > Four of a Kind > Full House > Flush > Straight > Three of a Kind > Two Pair > One Pair > High Card.
The player with the best hand wins the pot. If everyone else folds, you win immediately – no need to show your cards.
Pro Tip: Your position at the table matters. Acting later (near the dealer button) gives you more info, so you can play more hands. Start with play-money games to practice before playing for real cash. Good luck and enjoy the game!
